| Denis Diderot (1713-1784) is best remembered as the general editor of the Encyclopedie and as one of its main contributors. The project absorbed most of his energies from 1750 to 1772. Technology figures largely in the text and in the accompanying plates, and the work also contains numerous articles on ethical and philosophical topics. Though produced in a society still dominated by the Roman Catholic Church, the Encyclopedia reflects its editors hostility to religious authority. The Encyclopedia encapsulates the spirit of the French Enlightenment and is its most note-worthy product. |
